How to Install ATI fglrx Driver on Fedora Linux

Update on Nov. 29, 2011: ATI fglrx driver work on Fedora 16 with GNOME 3 Shell with Catalyst driver 11.11 (xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-11.11).

Update on Oct. 9, 2011: GNOME 3 shell works now with fglrx on Fedora 15 with Catalyst driver 11.9: xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-11.9-1.fc15.x86_64.

This post introduces how to install ATI fglrx driver on Fedora. This tutorial is based on Fedora 15 and the driver is from rpmfusion’s repository. The ATI fglrx driver works well on Gnome 3 on my computer.

Now let’s look at how to install the fglrx driver on Fedora.

Enable repository

First, enable the rpmfusion’s repository:

Enable RPM Fusion repositories

Install ATI fglrx driver

Install the catalyst driver:

# yum install xorg-x11-drv-catalyst  xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs.i686

That’s it. Reboot the Linux and the fglrx should be enabled by default now.

这是一个完整的过程, 根据我的这个再配一个应该是很简单了.

1. Download the latest fglrx driver from ati’s website.

2. sh ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run –listpkg

3. zypper install kernel-source

4. sh ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run –buildpkg SuSE/SUSE111-IA32

5. rpm -Uvh fglrx_7_4_0_SUSE111-8.582-1.i386.rpm

6. if build kernel module failed:
fglrx-kernel-build.sh

7. aticonfig –initial –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

8. sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx

9. restart

My Linux: openSUSE 11.1 IA32 Linux 2.6.27.19-3.2-pae #1 SMP
My card: ATI Radeon X300

ATI fglrx on Fedora 10 Linux

FEdora 10下配置使用ATI fglrx驱动。
我的显卡是Radeon X300

I have got fglrx driver run ok on F10, my video card is ATI radeon x300. I
followed the instructions in fedoraforum.org:

Here is a list of what I have done:

Enable RPM Fusion repositories
安装rpmfusion的源。

2. yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs.i386
安装fglrx驱动和内核模块。

3. mv /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img.backup

4. mkinitrd -v /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`

5. add this “nopat” to the kernel arguments in /boot/grub/grub.conf
禁用内核PAT。使用驱动内置。

6. reboot

ATI的驱动现在做得已经越来越好用了, 在我的系统上已经不再出现以前导致死机的情况了. 实在可喜可贺啊. fglrx的驱动性能比开源的确实强出许多的.
以下是我的安装过程. 其实已经非常简单了, 使用rpmfusion已经编译修改好的驱动即可.

1. 加入rpmfusion源
su -
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

2. 升级系统
su -
yum update kernel kernel-devel kernel-headers
yum update

3. 安装fglrx驱动
yum install xorg-x11-drv-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs akmod-fglrx

4. 修改xorg.conf
以下是我的xorg.conf文件内容：

4)edit the xorg.conf

5)make a simlink from /usr/lib/dri to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri.

6) turn off the atieventsd service and let it not start at start up.
[root@localhost mzq]# /sbin/chkconfig –list | grep ati
atieventsd 0:off 1:on 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
[root@localhost mzq]# /sbin/chkconfig –level 2345 atieventsd off
[root@localhost mzq]# /sbin/chkconfig –list | grep ati
atieventsd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

I can not run at init 3 before, I find the reason is atieventsd!!
I have not found any use of it till now, so I just turn if off and do not let it run at startup.

Now I can run at init 3, and when I want to use a GUI, I just run startx. It’s good for me.

7)restart and check
run fglrxinfo and glxinfo
get info like this:

[mzq@localhost modules]$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7412 Release

[mzq@localhost modules]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
……
If direct rendering is Yes, it’s OK.

I run glxgears for a test.
I can get 2000+ scores on my computer.
My video card is ATI radeon X300 with 32M

then enjoy playing wine cstrike with OpenGL and compiz

这是我的xorg.con，我的显卡是ATI radeon X300，官方显卡驱动性能不错，但是有些这样那样的问题，如睡眠后无法唤醒，与firefox有冲突，开firefox会有帖图错误。

我现在使用的开源的radeon+dri+glx，性能还不错，比radeon好一些。

glxgears结果用官方的在2200左右，用开源的2100左右，而只使用radeon时1600左右。
